The high relief shell carving has been mounted in a 15ct gold setting with rope detailing. This piece has been converted from a brooch and is fitted with a bail for wearing as a pendant.
Medusa is a figure from Greek mythology, one of the Gorgon sisters. She is often depicted as a winged female creature with snakes for hair. According to myth, anyone who looked directly at her would be turned to stone. Medusa was originally a beautiful maiden but was transformed into a monster by Athena as punishment. In ancient Greece, her image was used on amulets and shields as a protective symbol, warding off evil and danger.
