When asked by Tiffany to create a simpler diamond design, Elsa Peretti set 12 small bezel diamonds at uneven intervals on a 36-inch gold chain. Her friend, designer Halston, later named it ‘Diamonds by the Yard’ after the spaced-out look of the stones. Peretti expanded the style with different diamond sizes and chain lengths, helping make diamond jewellery more wearable and accessible.
