A good quality long 9ct gold guard or muff chain that was made circa 1890-1900. It is made up of small, faceted cable links that catch the light in a subtle way. They have an inner link on each link so that the chain will not wear. This was a great Victorian idea that was quite complex to make. They lead to a large dog clip at the end which was usually used to attach a pocket watch or a cylinder of fur known as a muff to keep the wearer’s hands warm in winter. It can be worn as one long necklace or looped twice around the neck.
