SOLD - Antique, triple pearl choker necklace on 15ct Georgian hair clasp

This elegant necklace features a triple row of quality, cultured pearls hand knotted onto a 15ct rose gold mourning hair clasp. The necklace is choker length with graduated pearls, the largest measuring 7.5mm, and the smallest 3.5mm. The pearls are a sumptuous cream-white with subtle pink hues and have a deep lustre and nacre. There is an addition of two small pieces of chain which, when connected, act as a safety chain at the back of the neck.

The sentimental, mourning box clasp dates from the Georgian period and contains a section of dark, plaited hair underneath a clear piece of rock crystal, and is surrounded by a frame of sweet, seed pearls mounted in a crimped setting. Seed pearls were often used in mourning jewellery to represent tears for the dearly departed.

The seed pearls on the Georgian clasp do have a slight green discoloration which is expectant with its age. The pearls date to the Art Deco period and are in a very good condition with no sign of damage or corrosion.
