Georgian, Flemish Vlaam's Heart, silver, rose-cut diamond pendant
An exquisite and highly collectable historic treasure, this diamond crowned heart pendant is known as a "Vlaams hart" (Dutch for “Flemish heart”). These pendants were popular in the 18th and 19th century (especially in Antwerp) due to the deep devotion of the Flemish people for Virgen Maria (the Virgin Mary). They were traditionally given on Mother's day in celebration of Maria. The crowned heart symbolises the heart of Maria in a rosary. The wreath of roses has a central, suspended drop with the finest diamond in its centre - “beautiful and sparkling as the heart of Maria herself”.
Beautifully set with ten, rose-cut diamonds, crafted in European silver, and with sections overlaid in rose gold along with a rose gold bail. Circa 1810, this Vlaams Hart is in a very good condition considering that it is now over 200 years old!
